Amazon Smart Thermostat
A cheap, Alexa-enabled thermostat
Don’t be fooled by the price: Amazon’s Smart Thermostat may be affordable, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap. If anything, our reviewer found it to be one of the best she’s used in her 10 years of testing smart thermostats. The modern device — which is the cheapest smart thermostat you can buy right now — ensures your mom will feel comfortable no matter how hot or cold it is, as it will automatically adjust to the temperature of her home based on whether she’s inside, out and about, or asleep. It also offers native support for Alexa, so she can adjust the temperature hands-free using her voice. It normally retails for $79.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Lowe’s. Read our review.

Your mom can use the budget-friendly tablet to play games, access popular apps like Netflix and Twitter, or video chat with loved ones. Samsung Frame TV
A 4K TV that doubles as a work of art
There are a lot of TVs on the market, but not many stand out the way The Frame does. When you’re not using it, it transforms into a beautiful piece of home decor, one that displays artwork that could pass for a real painting. That’s all thanks to the TV’s anti-glare, low-reflection matte coating, which makes the artwork bear a stunning resemblance to the canvas paintings you might see in a museum.
All that beauty doesn’t come at the expense of functionality, though. When your mom is ready to watch her favorite show or film, the Frame functions as a 4K TV with a speedy 120Hz refresh rate and support for a variety of streaming apps. It also comes in a number of sizes, the smallest of which is the 32-inch panel released this year – which now can sense if people are in the room like larger models – that goes for $599.99. If you think your mom might prefer something bigger, the 55-inch config from 2022 is available from Best Buy, Samsung, and Target right now for around $1,499.99.
